New Band – Professionals in the industry

Meet the Band Members:

George Shelley

You may recognise a famous face in the band; George of previous Union J (X-Factor), I’m a celeb and Capital FM fame. He is the primary lyricist of the group.

Alex Pothecary

The youngest in the group, Alex is a talented multi-musician, he did a masters in music composition, and he used to be George’s boss!

Will Jackson

I have talked about Will on here many times, he is an extremely talented musician, composer and producer (he produces the bands songs).

Songs released so far:

  • Wasted
  • ANIMAL
  • DWYD (Dance With Your Demons)
  • Oblivion

I believe they have two more songs expected to come out soon, and they have an upcoming gig: 06.12.2025 at the Moor Vaults London! They will be debuting their song Twisted at this gig!

How I got to know the band:

Will started as my A-level Music Tech tutor, and now we’ve been friends for going on five years! I’ve described in more detail on my ‘About’ page and song posts the nature of how we have worked together over the years and how that has developed me as a musician and songwriter, so I won’t go into too much detail here. The main point is that I know Will to be an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer.

Hearing how the band came together about a year ago, it would appear that cafes are the band’s lucky charm! George and Alex were working at Chi Chi’s cafe in Enfield, London when they got to talking about their individual musical interests and ventures.

George of course explained his history as a member of the X-factor formed band Union J, from the height of the band’s popularity to how his experience in the music industry had sapped his motivation and enthusiasm for songwriting. To hear it in his own words, watch George’s video on the subject:

Alex informed the former boy band member that he had done a masters in music composition, a fact that greatly impressed George as he will tell anyone that will listen! And so Alex went from being George’s boss (not an easy job as George says he used to drop a lot of things) to the boys being friends and the beginnings of the band.

Together they started to develop some of the songs that George had written during his hiatus from the industry. These Instagram posts demonstrate how the band’s latest single DWYD was developed from start to finish:

Again fate (or rather a cafe) would play a part in the formation of the band. Sitting in a cafe chatting about work with a friend, Will was suddenly approached by a stranger who had been eavesdropping on their conversation! George needed a producer and so decided to take a chance in approaching this stranger who appeared to be just that.

From here, the boys would spend the year developing George’s songs, recording, producing and coming up with an effective (and cheap) way to promote the band to the world. Being that George already had a significant following some of their promotional content came down to an exchange: services for exposure. This is how I met George and Alex.

The boys were going to record music video footage at Kinetics Group studios in Corby, but there was one thing they were missing: someone to film bts footage who would be willing to do the work for free/an exchange. And so Will messaged me, we were working on my song Yvaine at the time so he offered me a free session as payment. My first impressions were that George is a hugger with boundless energy, and Alex is most definitely the cheeky younger brother of the group. It was a very long, very fun day full of musical spoilers and laughter. I filmed everything on George’s phone and my camcorder, (so when the band is world famous I will have unseen footage!) the primary purpose of me filming was so George could give a tour promoting the studio, you can see it here:

We had intended to film the boys showing off their outfits but kept on forgetting, hence the single goofy video of Will doing his catwalk at the end!

It was fun seeing how just lighting and staging can create an entirely different feel to a music video, how simplistic white light and sitting on the floor can perfectly reflect the not yet released song Goodbye’s melancholic tone in contrast to the jumping and strobe lights of ANIMAL. The most fun to film was probably the greenscreen bts as the boys danced as animals and ran from imaginary monsters!

Lightlines band is an example of turning hard times, thoughts and feelings into pure joy and electric music. Most of the songs describe George’s experiences and struggles and how he turned them into his power and creative outlet. The unreleased song ‘Goodbye’ written by Will follows this pattern. I feel that this band is perfectly exemplified by this quote:

“Where words fail, music speaks.”—  Hans Christian Andersen

Fun Fact: I actually met George back in 2015! He came to my school with Union J as part of a Children in Need effort, and I was one of the few children chosen to meet and interview the boys. I had never watched X-Factor and did not yet have a phone so I had no idea who they are, but was selected due to my musical involvement in the school. Determined to do the interview properly I went into research mode and quickly realised that they all looked pretty much the same (I’m sorry), and that George was the only one with different hair, making him the only one I could name when I actually met them. All I really remember is that he was very friendly and that he hugged me after I made him laugh; As the only children allowed to get autographs from the band, we came home with signed t-shirts (which I still have). My dad remembers being impressed that I was not at all nervous or starstruck about meeting a famous band, but I suppose it is hard to be in awe of someone you have never heard of (though of course I am a fan now that we have been reunited)!

Children in Need Photo: I am the girl centre right looking annoyed that my friend had her hand in my face, I’m sure you’ll recognise George on the far left!
